@Joe, thanks for adding to the conversation. Actually Wil Reynolds at SEER Interactive did all the work, I just asked the right questions. ;-)

SEO is work and takes time and committment.

One of the important things that you reiterate is that copy should be written for people, not bots. And sometimes I think it's reversed...then companies just end up with tons of copy that makes no sense or sounds like gobbleygook.

Well done.

I must agree with all that you've said. SEO in general is the sum of many small details - HTML coding details, tags, standards and so on. This is best handled by dedicated IT staff or outsourced.
If you must outsource some or all of it, you can have a designer build it all for you. Then later hire an SEO/marketing agency to tweak the HTML, copy and so on.

I also agree with going after the industry terms. This will be tough but keep at it. Also, domain age (in years) does have a significant impact on ranking so use an older domain if possible.

Use a blog to go after local or niche terms - blog posts are a little more disposable in that sense.

Incorporating keywords into the copy ('write for users not bots') is an art form but well worth the effort.

Great post.
