Flip Marcom on its Head

Recently Mack Collier introduced me to the Flip during a recent Plurkshop. My first reaction was, this is a toy for kids and people who like to make crazy YouTube videos, but then I looked into it and then…the wheels started turning.

We all know that marketing communications can be pretty stale when it comes to interactivity. So, I say out with the boring presentations, press releases and training videos and in with the Flip Videos!

Here’s my short list:

  • Product and new feature videoments (video announcements)
  • Training videos for partners and employees
  • Video quotes for press releases
  • White paper overviews (for those who don’t like to read)
  • Capturing trade show demos (for later use)
  • Analyst Relations (a video could be worth a thousand words and a lot of time)

Mark Goren also had some great other Flip uses for B2B, here’s a few:

  • Give ‘em away as promotional items
  • Create word-of-mouth ambassadors
  • Video testimonials

I don’t know about you, but I am going to start flipping out soon! If you are already flipping, how do you use your Flip?

  • Tim Jackson- Masi Guy:

I’m all over this. Have been talking about it for months. Time to do it. Prices are coming down. I’m buying one with my own money so I can use it for work; that’s how important I feel a video presence is becoming.

  • Mack Collier:

I’m with Tim, I think it’s about time to get one. And it’s exciting to see businesses have such a cheap way to add video to their marketing mix, you have some great examples of how they can do that!

  • Beth Harte:

@timjackson, @mackcollier…thanks for the tip on the Flip! (I couldn’t resist that one) ;-) I really do think that video will garner some great response. It just feels more ‘human.’ And I think folks are so short on time that they don’t read so why not give them a quick clip instead. @mackcollier, a Flip would be great for all of your upcoming speaking engagements. I won’t be there to see you, but maybe you can share a bit of a flip?

  • Paul Chaney:

Like Twitter, the Flip has received the greatest amount of buzz. However, like Plurk, the RCA Small Wonder truly is a better camera. It offers features the Flip doesn’t such as a movable screen and SD expansion card slot for increased memory. The newest versions allow for instant uploads to YouTube, just like the Flip. Oh, and the Small Wonder is less expensive.

But, hey, if people want to spend more for less just because the Flip is “cool,” by all means, be my guest! :-)

  • Beth Harte:

@pchaney, thanks for the tip! I am going to check into the Small Wonder a bit more. To me, the most important thing is video quality. So, I’ll need to do a comparison between the two. Paul, I’m assuming that you have a Small Wonder. If so, could you share video samples with me? I’d like to see the quality. That would be much appreciated.

  • Mark Goren:

    Hi, Beth:

I love the idea of the Flip video (and all other small camcorders, for that matter), but my one problem is that they don’t seem to be easily compatible with Macs. I think there are workarounds, but, still, not perfect or easy. (Correct me if I’m wrong. Anyone?)

  • Mark Goren:

Wait a minute, just saw that the Small Wonder EZ105 is Mac compatible.

So there you go, now there’s no problem giving these to customers for promotional purposes or otherwise.

  • Beth Harte:

@markgoren, see, this is why social media works! You just found a camera that’ll work in a way you need it to because @pchaney gave us the skinny on another cool product. Me, I am PC-based (still waiting for the Mac Fairy to arrive), so the Flip will work out just fine and the Flip tripod is a must have for me…
